Question

Recently a major news program in the Los Angeles area did a segment on sex during sleepwalking. It seemed fanciful.

Is it possible for a person to have sex during a sleepwalking episode and not awaken during the event and not recall it afterwards? Do you know of a body of literature about this phenomenon?

Answer

No, I don't. But if the programme was on a reputable channel, I see no reason to disbelieve the claims. Sleepwalking is an automatic behaviour and maybe for some people sex is too. No conscious brain is required, so why bother waking up - unless they were trying to use the sleepwalking to get out of a moral or even legal responsibility?

I'm actually more curious about the partner of the sleepwalker. How did he or she get involved? Was he or she also asleep? Or don't they mind, or don't they notice, whether their partner in passion is asleep or awake at the time?

From the safe distance of the Southern tip of Africa, I'm really concerned about the sex life of Californians - as things are obviously worse than we thought. We won't be holding our breath for the movie version - "Sleeping in Seattle?"
