Joan: I'm 73-years-old and I'm very healthy except that I've been getting bladder infections for quite a few years now.

Harry: That's quite common in older ladies.

Joan: I've already had two operations where the doctor has stretched the tube that comes out of the bladder. They've done that twice but it doesn't help. I've just had another very bad attack and I'd like to know whether there isn't something new they can do?

Harry: There may well be something new because people are making advances in the treatment of bladder infections. May I just ask you whether you also had the problem of incontinence?

Joan: Not very much.

Harry: If you sneeze or cough does the water run out?

Joan: Sometimes that happens if my bladder is full.

Harry: Well look, I think you must go back to your urologist and tell him that the previous operations have not helped. If that's all he can suggest then go and see another doctor.

Joan: Another urologist?

Harry: Well you can either see another urologist or a gynaecologist because these are people who know a great deal about this. So I would say that if this doctor is not helping you, you must go and see another urologist or a gynaecologist.

Joan: So there's no new method that they could try?

Harry: There are a number of things that can be done and people have made advances - you're absolutely right. And that's why I say that if this doctor persists with the old treatment which has failed, then go and see somebody else.

Joan: Thank you so much.
