What can be done for bad acne?
Posted Thu, 07 Jun 2001

Edna: I've got a grandson of 14 and he's got quite bad acne. I wondered if there is anything that he can take?

Harry: There are many things that you can use for acne. We always like to start with the local preparations such as things that remove the grease from the skin, and there are a whole variety of these. Some of these may also contain antibiotics because there is some evidence that certain germs in the skin may aggravate the condition.

Edna: He's tried all the face washes and that sort of thing.

Harry: Okay, then you can go onto things taken by mouth. For example, he could take an antibiotic. An antibiotic that they commonly use for this is a medicine called Doxycycline. So there are things that you can take by mouth. If that doesn't work and it's really bad and progresses, then there's a very good medicine called Roaccutane. But that we usually reserve for the worst cases which have failed to respond to other remedies. In summary, I would say that today the great majority of patients with acne can be adequately treated.

Edna: Thank you very much.
