Andre: What is the effect of eating oily, fatty fishes…. Prof. Harry: Very good. It will keep you alive for a much longer time. There is a wealth of evidence that fatty fish which contain these fish oils are associated with a decreased risk of heart disease. That is why we advocate that people should have fish. You know what Harry Seftel’s formula for diet is: fish, fowl and fibre. You remember that?
Andre: But it seems to put my serum cholesterol up rather than down.
Prof. Harry: Well, that I would say is unusual. What else are you eating?
Andre: I have been eating my usual sensible diet. At one stage my serum cholesterol was about 4.5. It has gone up to 6.4, and the only change is that I have been eating these smoked salmon trout off cuts.
Prof. Harry: Well, there might be a problem especially if it is a smoked fish. When I speak of fish I am speaking about fish you pull out of the sea and you grill it. But once you introduce the factor of
processing like smoking it, then it is possible that there may be a problem. All I am saying is that in general fatty fish will be good for you. The other thing to check out is the fact that you have two kinds of cholesterol – good and bad cholesterol. The bad cholesterol which we call the LDL and the HDL cholesterol.
Andre: I have 1.6 of good cholesterol and 2.7 of bad.
Prof. Harry: You are marvellous! You’re going to live to a hundred.
Andre: Yes, but they say the total is 6.4.
Prof. Harry: Well, there’s something wrong there. If you have got 1.6 of good and 2.7 of bad cholesterol then you are going to live for at least another 75 years.
