Prof Harry: That’s an antihistamine which is commonly used for hay fever. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t.
Jill: It was working but one of the side effects stated on the leaflet is urticaria.
Prof Harry: Unfortunately any medicine can also cause allergies but that would be a rare complication.
Jill: Then he cut grass and he got urticaria while he was under the Telfast.
Prof Harry: You see, as far as possible you must avoid the causes of the hay fever. That’s the first prize because if you can avoid the causes you may not have to take the medicine.
Jill: We went to the doctor. He gave him a cortisone injection and after a few days it came back again. Then we went back and he gave him another injection and he put him on cortisone medication which he had to take three, three times a day for three days. He had to reduce the medication and now he is on one. Must he finish the course?
Prof Harry: I would say that he must finish the course, it is very important, because if you discontinue abruptly, then you run the risk of a relapse.
