Some people are born with a predisposition to varicose veins — if others in your family suffer from them, then you may well be one of them.

This means that you have to take particular precautions to prevent yourself from getting severe varicose veins again. You may not be able to prevent them entirely, but you can certainly minimise them.

If you have a job which requires standing for long periods then you should seriously consider wearing support stockings which should be fitted to you by an experienced nurse at a pharmacy. They are quite expensive, but highly effective.

You should also try to get off your feet whenever possible. When you come home at the end of the day and you can finally relax, put your feet up — literally! You should sit with your feet elevated to above the level of your hips. This prevents the blood from pooling in the legs and will help prevent varicose veins from forming.

Get some exercise — anything which requires you to use your legs and feet. This stimulates the flow of blood in your leg and again prevents blood from pooling.

Get into the habit of doing all these things and you should at least manage to minimise the formation of varicose veins.
