Question

Is it possible to be allergic to alcohol, wine in particular? Even after only two glasses I feel terrible the next day. Is there any way around this problem, other than not drinking?

Answer

People who are allergic to wine are usually allergic to the sulphur or tannin in the wine, and not to the alcohol. If you can drink grape juice, and other types of alcohol, you are probably not allergic to the grapes, or to the alcohol.

Many people have a sulphur allergy. It is used as a preservative, and is also found in orange squash, and other products.

The sulphur content of red wine is much higher than that of white wine. Unfortunately, if you can't tolerate a light white wine then you will have to do without.
