Question
One of my cats slept on my arm and a skin rash appeared 12 hours later. I have had cats in my home for many years and have not suffered from allergies to them in the past. Is it possible that I could have suddenly become sensitised to this particular animal? Would treatment with a simple anti-histamine cream suffice?
Answer
It is certainly possible to suddenly develop allergies where there have been none before. It is also possible that you cat was in something in the garden to which you are sensitive and brought particles of this back in on its coat.
A simple antihistamine cream or one of the mild steroid creams available over the counter should be adequate. However, if the rash persists or gets worse, please see your GP.
