Question
What is septicaemia?
Answer
Septicaemia is a situation in which bacteria invade the blood circulation, so affecting many parts of the body. In simple cases this leads to fever and malaise. In more severe cases it can lead to organ damage and shock.
It can occur in any situation where bacteria manage to get into the blood stream rather than being confined to a local area of infection.
Treatment is by antibiotics, either oral or intravenous depending on the severity of the infection.
