Difference between caesarian section and hysterectomy
Posted Tue, 05 Dec 2000

Question

What is the difference between a caesarian section and a hysterectomy?

Answer

These are two totally different operations carried out for completely different reasons.

A caesarian section is an operation in which the lower part of the uterus (womb) is cut open to deliver a baby. The uterus is then sewn up again and left intact.

A hysterectomy is an operation in which the whole uterus is removed, sometimes along with the ovaries as well. It is carried out for a number of different reasons, cancer being one of the most common. It can also be used in a woman who is past child-bearing age who is having uncontrollable bleeding.

After you have had a caesarian section you still carry on with your normal menstrual cycle and can conceive a child again. After a hysterectomy, you cannot conceive and carry a child.
