Question
Please may I have some information about geographical tongue?
Answer
Geographical tongue is a form of glossitis - called benign migratory glossitis. Glossitis is an acute or chronic inflammation of the tongue. Glossitis can indicate other problems which may be local, such as poorly-fitting dentures, irritants such as alcohol, tobacco and spicy foods. It can also be a sign of diseases such as vitamin deficiencies or anaemia.
Geographical tongue is diagnosed if there are denuded areas, particularly if they are not painful.
There is no specific treatment for geographical tongue.
