Question
My wife is having her gall bladder removed. What are the different types of surgery available for this and what can I do to hasten her recovery after surgery?
Answer
Removal of the gall bladder, or cholecystectomy, is no longer regarded as the huge operation it used to be in the past. In fact, in certain centres, and in the right patients, this can now be performed as a "key-hole" procedure, after which the person is usually out of hospital and up and about within two or three days. However, you will have to talk to your surgeon about the options which are specifically available to your wife, as each person is different.
There are few, if any, side effects to this type of surgery.
As for hastening your wife's recovery I would have thought that taking over the shopping, cooking and general running of the house would help enormously!
