Question
My daughter is eight months pregnant. She has been having rapid heart beat for several months now. In checking on different websites, I've found information on Paroxysmal atrial tachycardia. The articles all seem to say this is not life threatening, but in combination with the pregnancy will there be a danger having a normal birth, with the stress of the birthing process? All indications are the baby is going to be large, but no medical problems.

Answer
With all due respect this highlights one of the problems of health information on the web. How did the website diagnose Paroxysmal atrial tachycardia?

Clearly it didn't! So how do you know that your daughter has this condition? Could it be one of the many other conditions that can cause a rapid heart beat? In pregnancy a slightly more rapid heart beat than normal is expected.

Another cause could be severe anaemia which may be associated with pregnancy which might well need to be corrected before the delivery of the baby.

I'm not saying that it is either normal or anaemia, what I am saying is don't use the web to try and self diagnose. If the symptoms are troublesome and you are concerned, have your daughter ask the midwife at her routine visit, or go to a doctor. Once you have a diagnosis, use the web to get more information on it.
