Muscle development in sporting teenagers

Question

I have two teenaged boys who are very good sportsmen. Will their muscles develop naturally, or should they supplement their diet and do extra exercise?

Answer

If your sons are keen on their chosen sports, then I would imagine that they train frequently, and in ways appropriate to the sports concerned.

Regular training and a sensible diet, which is low in fats and high in complex carbohydrates, will be all they need to develop the muscle strength and fitness levels they require.

Supplementation is generally not necessary.

See Nutrition for the endurance athlete, parts one and two.
